On the morning of May 20, 2022, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Dang Hoai Bac, President of Posts and Telecommunications Insitute of Technology, participated in the kick-off meeting to launch the research project entitled “Agricultural IoT systems based on edge computing” under the ASEAN-IVO program sponsored by National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), Japan.

The kick-off meeting also had the participation of Dr. Hiroshi Emoto, the ASEAN-IVO Secretariat; Dr Chalee Vorakulpipat, Representative of National Center of Electronic Technology and Informatics of Thailand (NECTEC); Prof.Dr. Norliza Noor, Representative of University of Technology Malaysia (UTM), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang Dang Hai, Former Vice President of Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology, Dr. Nguyen Trung Linh, Representative of University of Engineering andTechnology – Vietnam National University, Hanoi and other project members.

Research project “Agricultural IoT system based on edge computing” was led by Dr. Hoang Trong Minh, Head of Division of Telecommunications Network, Faculty of Telecommunications 1. The implementation period is from April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2024. The goal of the project is to use the advancement in the Internet of Things (IoT) field to deliver smarter agricultural systems. The project will build an IoT-based framework with intelligent computation for fertilization control and plant disease prediction of an indoor smart farm, which enhances efficiency and productivity in agriculture.

The project offers solutions including: New intelligent edge computing solutions for data collection and local response control in smart agricultural systems, Authentication-based security framework, data preservation suitable for IoT applications in smart farming, an automated farming system for indoor smart farms with the involvement of robot arms and drones.

Speaking at the project kick-off, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Dang Hoai Bac, President of PTIT, expressed his delight that the project “Agricultural IoT based on edge computing” by PTIT researchers and researchers from other ASEAN universities was approved. He also thanked the National Institute of Information and Communication Technology (NICT) for the ASEAN-IVO initiative as well as the strong support for the cooperation between sides. “This partnership is leverage to facilitate further cooperation among participating partners in the future. We hope that ASEAN-IVO will attract more and more practical research projects to make great contributions to the sustainable development of the region”, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Dang Hoai Bac said.

At the kick-off meeting, Dr. Hoang Trong Minh, project leader and other members together exchanged and discussed the effective implementation of the project.

The ICT Virtual Organization of ASEAN Institutes and NICT – ASEAN-IVO is a global alliance of ICT R&D institutes and universities in the ASEAN region and Japan. This organization aims at strengthening partnerships of international collaboration and cooperation throughout the ASEAN region to solve common challenges in the region through information and communication technologies and applications.
